Mission

The Chinese International Piano Competition is one of a series of world music events sponsored by New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV). Its purpose is to provide Chinese people from around the world with a platform to exchange cultures and arts from East and West.

Organizer

The Chinese International Piano Competition is sponsored by NTDTV and will be televised around the world through via satellite, cable and the Internet.

Panel of Judges

The Panel of Judges for the Chinese International Piano Competition will be composed of professional veteran pianists and they will be responsible for judging the contestants' performances. The decisions of the Panel for all rounds shall be final.

Procedures and Competition Repertoire

  1. The Competition is divided into three rounds: Preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals.
    1) Preliminary pieces: Contestants may choose to play the 1st movement of any of Mozart Piano Sonatas (K545 excluded). No repeat is needed.
    2) Semi-final pieces: Felix Mendelssohn Variations Sérieuses in D minor, Op. 54.
    3) Final pieces: Total two required (one from each composer listed below).

    1. Contestants may choose to play the 1st movement of any of Beethoven Piano Sonatas. No repeat is needed.
      • Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2
      • Piano Sonata No. 18 in E-flat major, Op. 31, No. 3
      • Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53
      • Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57
    2. Johann Sebastian Bach / Ferruccio Busoni (transcriptions): Chaconne, from Partita for solo violin No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004, transcribed for piano.
  2. Contestants are required to play from memory.
  3. The Panel has the right to suspend the playing.

Eligibilities

  1. All students or teachers from professional performing arts academies and every pianist who has reached a professional level may sign up for the competition, provided they are 16 years of age or older.
  2. Only ethnic Chinese or Chinese descendents are accepted in this competition.
  3. Eligibilities: The Panel of Judges will examine all application materials before mailing the invitation by the Organization Committee to all eligible contestants, who will in turn obtain their visas to USA and register with the Committee.

  3. Application package:
    1) The applicant should fill out and submit the Registration and Resume Forms for the Chinese International Piano Competition, both of which can be downloaded from the Competition’s website. The signature of a legal guardian is required if applicant is under 18 years old.
    2) The applicant should provide two 1x1 inch color photos (digital photos preferred) and a copy of their valid ID.
    3) The above application materials should be sent to the Competition’s Organization
    Committee by registered express mail. All application materials will not be returned.
  4. Registration fee: A US$50 registration fee shall apply. Accepted forms of payment are credit cards, cash, traveler’s check, or money orders. Please make your check payable to New Tang Dynasty Television.
  5. Registered express mail charges: for applicant who need a United States visa, please indicate so on the Registration Form, and pay an additional US$25 fee for the registered express mail for the visa materials.

Date

  • • Preliminaries in Taiwan will be held in September 5th - 6th, 2009.
  • Competitions in the USA will be held in October 9th - 11th, 2009.
    - October 8th (Thu.): Contestant Registration, orientation & rehearsal;
    - October 9th (Fri.): Preliminaries;
    - October 10th (Sat.): Semifinals;
    - October 11th (Sun.): Finals (including Future Star Performance & Award Ceremony).

Awards

  • One Gold Award (US$10,000)
  • One Silver Award (US$3,000)
  • One Bronze Award (US$1,000)
  • A number of outstanding performance award winners.

Accommodation and Transportation

  1. The Competition’s Organization Committee will recommend hotels close to New York City for contestants.
  2. Contestants and their entourage shall pay for their own accommodation and transportation. The Competition’s Organization Committee can arrange accommodation of entourage if entrusted, but only to the designated hotels.

Miscellaneous

  1. Upon registration, contestants acknowledge the validity of the Rules and Regulations for the Competition.
  2. Contestants must follow the arrangements by the Competition’s Organization Committee. The Committee has the right to revoke violators’ eligibilities and the prizes awarded.
  3. New Tang Dynasty Television is entitled to all copyrights of audio and video products made during the Competition.
  4. It is mandatory for the contestant to be present at the award ceremony to accept any awards, in the absence of the winning contestant, the award will be considered forfeited by the contestant.
  5. Immediately after the final round of the competition, if the contestant is offered any performance or contract opportunities, it is the contestant’s liability to notify the judges committee.
  6. It is the contestant’s full responsibility to handle any unexpected situations during the duration of the competition.
  7. The Competition’s Organization Committee shall have the ultimate authority to interpret the Rules and Regulations for the Competition and have the right to make any changes to them as necessary.
